Review: The Covenant by Naomi Ragen

When her husband and daughter do not return home as expected, pregnant and bed-ridden Elise Margulies must face the fears from her nightmares. Both are kidnapped by Islamic terrorists.

Across the globe, Elise's grandmother hears the news and calls in the troops. She and three friends, all survivors of Auschwitz, revive a commitment made long ago, to protect the lives of their families, at any cost. The terrorists' deadline to execute Elise's husband and daughter closes in on them. Can they be rescued in time?

The Covenant is fast-paced and intense, but full of warmth and heart. The characters voices, especially the four members of the Covenant, are moving and real. Ragen brings the reader straight into the heart of a nation in turmoil, stricken by terror, but shows the beauty, the hope that sustains the people of Israel.

Side Note...
If you've been following my blog for any length of time, you've seen this title lingering on the "Currently Reading" list for an unmentionably long time. This is why: I read the first couple chapters, and put the book aside. I have a really hard time with a story in which you fall in love with a character only to watch them perish. I had not read the story to find out if that's how it was going to go, but at that point, I wasn't up to finding out. Funny how that works.

Anyway... so now I've read it! And if you've been thinking about picking it up, I highly recommend it.

I loved this book too! And I totally understand what you mean about falling in love with a character and then having to mourn them. I'm quite sure it's a legitimate kind of grief!

Here's my review of the book if you're interested.
