On the Journey (Part 1): Waxing Punk-Poetic

Yesterday I printed my entire manuscript, double-spaced (254 pages), and hopped over to Starbucks to read it. And I have to say that I completely disliked it. Which is no good.

I feel like it is a little bit melodramatic in places, Eli's a little whiny at times, and the whole thing is like a nice dinner with very little or no seasoning. So it's edible, but not engaging. It might be passable, but it's not pleasurable. Not memorable.

Anyway. I have been thinking about the voice (Eli's voice) and how plain and undeveloped I feel that it is, and about how he's this punk kid, so how would that flavor his voice? He's also a lyricist, so I think that makes him a little bit poetic. Just a little.

So I'm trying to figure that out, steep my brain in that idea (on the back-burner, though-- I'm still working on my last three chapters!) a little bit.

I started the read-through so that I could identify all the loose ends that still need to be addressed in these last three chapters, maybe resolve on some themes, too. So I'm still working on that a little bit. I have ideas for a second and third book, so I'm also keeping that in mind a little bit, so that this story sets up some of the premise for them.

So that's pretty much been my week since last blog. Still working on those trouble-some last three chapters!
