After Kira's mother dies, members of her village try to have her thrown out and left to die because of her twisted leg. But the Council of Guardians recognizes Kira's unusual gifting as a weaver and intervene to save her. While she enjoys the privileges of her new life, she begins to discover that things about her village are not as they seem. Is she brave enough to uncover those secrets, no matter what they mean?
Gathering Blue is a companion to Lois Lowry's Newberry Award Winner The Giver. The stories don't necessarily overlap and do not share characters, but the premise is the same in many ways. An elite council of leaders seeks to control its people, to protect them and ensure a future of their own choosing.
Lowry's characters always draw me in and are easy to empathize with and understand. She weaves a solid message through the story, one the reader isn't likely to forget.
