When Prince Rupert of the Forest Kingdom comes of age, his father sends him on a quest straight out of legend: to go forth and slay a dragon. But on his quest, Rupert discovers that real life doesn't have much in common with songs and legends. And when he returns home (with the dragon and the princess he rescued said dragon from), he discovers that things have only gotten worse in his absence. The Blue Moon is rising, the Darkwood is spreading, and with it a host of demons threatens to destroy the land and all who live in it. So yet again, Rupert as the expendable second son is called upon to lead a quest that is the Forest Kingdom's only hope.
Simon R. Green's writing is wry and clever. Some fantasies take themselves very seriously... this is not one of them. The steady march toward the doom of the Forest Kingdom under the rising Blue Moon is peppered with witty dialogue and sardonic humor. The characters are lovable in all their flawed glory. Great story.
