An assassin, sent by the North Witch, Morgause, seeks to murder Arthur, Britain's king of four years. Her sons also journey to Cadbury to counsel with the king.
But Morgause isn't the only one unwilling to accept Arthur as king. Other tribes refuse fealty, prompting Merlinnus to take action. Something must be done to prove Arthur's right to rule once and for all. He devises a sword set in stone for this very purpose. As the ceremony draws near, everything seems to be going well. But a surprise visit from Morgause threatens to unravel all of Merlinnus's plans. Can they stop her from stealing Arthur's crown and uncover the plot to assassinate him before it is too late?
Yolen's tale is different than the traditional version of the story. The prose is poetic and wry at times. The whole cast of characters are endearing.
